The Royal Bahamas Defence Force is the only military arm of The Bahamas Government charged with responsibility for the defence of the territorial sovereignty of The Commonwealth of The Bahamas. As an armed service, the organizational structure of the Defence Force was patterned after the British Royal Navy. Consequently, the Defence Force is not a law enforcement agency. However, under the Defence Act, the Defence Force is allowed to assist civilian law enforcement agencies in the execution of their duties when required. Additionally, the Defence Force is also charged with providing disaster relief assistance and any other duty as determined by the National Security Council.
